Boring routines

Show me a world champion, a professional athlete or a dedicated person and I’ll show you a damn boring routine.

Routine is how they all get better. Repeating the same tasks over and over to improve themselves.

Exercising. Eating healthy. Getting 8 hours sleep. Training their sport every day. Getting a massage. Eating 8 meals a day. It’s all boring routine.

Repeating something over and over is the only real way to get good at something. In sport they call it drilling: repeating a particular action over and over until it becomes second nature.

Champions do this endlessly.

Obviously the champion lifestyle isn’t for everybody, and nor should it be. But next time when we’re wondering how to get better at something, you just have to look in depth at an experienced professional athlete.

We look at a pro athlete like Tiger Woods and marvel at how amazing he is at his chosen craft. We marvel at somebody like Marlon Brando in The Godfather and talk about his amazing acting.

Both of those people spent years and decades of deliberate routine practice to get to where they were.

They worked harder than everybody else to be better than everybody else.

They followed boring routines.
